My feelings on soapstone countertops are similar to my feelings on marble countertops.  I love the warmer, softer look of soapstone.  The maintenance and durability are the drawbacks.

Soapstone does not require the typical stone sealer.  It does require frequent a wipe-downs with mineral oil.  In the first year, it should be wiped with mineral oil every week; after that, every few months.

Soapstone scratches and chips easily, too.  The small surface scratches are easily sanded out, but it does require time.

On the good side, soapstone countertops do not stain easily.  Also, they are extremely chemical resistant.  As with the other stone countertops, soapstone is highly heat resistant.

Soapstone's unique look is worth the extra care and time for some homeowners, not for others.  If you love the look, you won't mind the extra work that goes with it.
