Pre-Planning
2 weeks - several months
Other than completion, this is the best part. This is the ideas stage. Personally, I love to daydream about my dream kitchen.

Try to get a grasp of what you want to do with the space.  Also, try to determine whether you're ready to seriously consider a potentially large project.  Ask yourself these questions:
  • Do I need more or less storage?
  • Do I need more or less counter area?
  • How "kid-friendly" does the area need to be?
  • Do I need bigger or smaller appliances?
  • Do I need additional appliances?
  • How do I want to use the space? (family meals, entertaining)
  • What do I love about the space now? Why?
  • What do I hate about the space now? Why?
  • Does the current layout work or is a change needed?
  • Do I need more space? If so, am I prepared to move walls? What rooms could I break into for the space? (closet, dining room, garage)
  • Can I (and my family) survive without a kitchen for several months? If not, where can I set up a temporary kitchen?
  • Can I afford a renovation project? How much can I afford?
  • What style or look am I going for?
  • Should I hire a designer or general contractor for the whole project?
  • Do my local custom cabinetry shops offer design services?
  • What time of year will this project work best with my schedule?
Now is also the time to think about the types of appliances, counter tops, flooring, fixtures and cabinetry you want.  In the next step, you'll juggle your wants, needs and budget.  But for now, go wild with ideas.

Buy "Kitchen and Bath' and 'Interior Design' magazines.  Get appliance catalogs and brochures (request them free online from most companies).  Cut out pictures or mark pages of things you like.  It can be equally helpful to mark things you hate and want to avoid.

And most of all - Have Fun!!!
